How it works

How to make a UPC label in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Enter your UPC number

Type or paste the 12 digits. If you have 11 digits or the 13-digit EAN form, the tool explains what’s wrong and offers a fix you can accept with one click. It never changes your number on its own.

  2. Step 2: Pick your label stock

Choose an Avery sheet, an A4 sheet, a thermal roll or a custom roll size. The preview shows exactly how the barcode fits, and how many labels go on each sheet.

  3. Step 3: Download the PDF and print at 100%

In the print dialog choose Actual size (100%) and turn off “Fit to page”. Test one page on plain paper against your label sheet first.

Print-ready, for real

Why sellers use it

Most barcode generators give you an image and leave the sizing to you. This one lays the barcode out on your actual label stock at a GS1-correct size.

  • No sign-up, no watermark

Single labels and files of up to 250 labels are free. Nothing to register, nothing stamped on your labels.

  • Correct GS1 sizing

Barcodes stay between 80% and 200% of the standard size with the blank margins scanners need. Bars are never stretched or squashed to fill a label.

  • Your files never leave your browser

Labels are drawn on your device. The numbers and product names you type are not uploaded to our server.

  • Check digit checked

Every number is checked before it prints, with plain-English help for lost leading zeros and mistyped digits.

  • Preview = print file

The preview and the PDF come from the same layout, so what you see is what prints, down to the millimetre.

  • PDF, PNG and SVG

PDF label sheets and roll pages for printing, plus PNG and SVG barcode images for packaging artwork.

You need a real UPC number first

This tool draws the barcode for a number you already own. It does not issue, sell or register UPC numbers, and we are not affiliated with GS1. A correct check digit only proves the number is well-formed, not that it belongs to you. Retailers and Amazon check GS1’s records, so get your numbers from GS1.

UPC label FAQ

Is this UPC label generator really free?

Yes. Single labels, bulk files of up to 250 labels per PDF, every supported label sheet and roll, and PNG and SVG downloads are free, with no watermark and no account. A paid Pro plan (cloud sync, larger jobs, FNSKU labels) is planned and has a waitlist only. See Free vs Pro.

Can I make up my own UPC number?

Not for products you sell through retailers or Amazon. A UPC has to come from GS1, either as a single GS1 US GTIN or from a GS1 Company Prefix licence, so the number is registered to your company as the brand owner. Amazon says it checks product UPCs against the GS1 database (as of November 2026), so made-up or resold numbers can be rejected. A made-up number only works for internal use that never leaves your own stockroom. Read how to get a UPC number from GS1.

Will the barcode scan at the checkout?

The tool controls the barcode itself: it only draws numbers whose check digit adds up, keeps the size within GS1’s 80%–200% range, keeps the blank margins (quiet zones) on both sides, and never distorts bar widths. You control the printing: print at Actual size (100%) on a decent printer with solid black on white. Scan your first printed label with a phone barcode app before you print the whole batch.

What size should a UPC barcode be?

At 100% (the standard size) a UPC-A barcode is 37.29 × 25.93 mm (1.47 × 1.02 in) including its side margins and digits. GS1 allows 80% to 200%; at 80% it is 29.8 mm (1.17 in) wide. The tool picks the largest size that fits your label automatically, or you can set it yourself. More in UPC barcode size and magnification.

Can I download a PNG or SVG instead of a PDF?

Yes. After you generate a label you can download a PDF (for label sheets and thermal rolls), a PNG at 300, 600 or 203 dpi, or a vector SVG. Choose “Barcode image only” as the label stock to get just the barcode at its real size for packaging artwork. For printing labels, the PDF is the most reliable because it keeps the exact physical size.

What is the difference between UPC-A and UPC-E?

UPC-A is the full 12-digit barcode used on most products in the US and Canada, and it is what this tool prints. UPC-E is a shortened 8-digit version for very small packs; it only exists for some numbers. UPC-E is not supported yet: if you enter 8 digits the tool will tell you.

Do you store the UPC numbers I type?

No. Labels are generated in your browser, so the numbers and product names you type are not sent to our server. If you click “Save to My labels”, the product is stored in this browser only (local storage), and you can delete it from My labels. We count anonymous events such as “PDF downloaded” with the label stock used, never the number or product name. Details are in our privacy policy.
